2022

B:Music Jazzlines Commission
for alto saxophone, electric guitar and drum kit, 45’ (2022)
One of two artists to receive the B:Music Jazzlines commission, for which I wrote a set of music collaboratively with Berlin-based saxophonist Asger Nissen, for a new bass-less trio formed with New York Jazz drummer Jeff Williams. The works were premiered on the Symphony Hall Stage on October 30th 2022 and were filmed and recorded for future release.

2021

TIMEBEING (for two improvisers)
for electric guitar, trumpet and electronics, 28'
One of eight composers/multi-disciplinary artists worldwide commissioned by the art gallery Centrala to produce an audio-visual work exploring “the hope of post-lockdown life” for their ‘All Systems Go’ project. Performed by myself (guitar and electronics) and Christos Stylianides (trumpet and electronics), the film below premiered July 2021 at Centrala, alongside a work by multi-disciplinary artist Rie Nakajima and a live re-interpretation of TIMEBEING by myself and Aram Bahmaie (electric bass and electronics).

2020

Assimilation (or a failure in the art thereof)
for solo piano, 5’30”
One of six composers nationwide commissioned by Contemporary Arts Jazz Ensemble (CAJE), Manchester to compose a miniature during lockdown. The piece was expanded to a full solo piano movement, recorded remotely and released online in September 2021.

 

2019

A Tear in the Fabric
for violin and percussion, 7’30”

Commissioned by Gloria Yehilevsky for her duo, ‘String-Struck Duo’, featuring Shannon Riley on violin and Gloria on percussion. The piece was initially going to premiere as part of a concert series in Buffalo (New York) and Chicago in winter 2019, which was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Abstract Visions of a Foreign Land
for large ensemble, 41’

Premiering in the Eastside Jazz Club, Birmingham, UK, on April 10th, 2019, Abstract Visions was widely-praised and was subsequently awarded one of the highest marks to ever be awarded to a final year Conservatoire project. The works aim was to merge influences from ‘spectral’ composers Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail with the language of modern jazz circles. The ensemble was comprised of trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone, string quartet, electric guitar, double bass and drum kit (Movement IV features an additional flute and clarinet). Abstract Visions of a Foreign Land was given a second performance on the Birmingham Symphony Hall Stage on June 29th 2022, hosted by B:Music and TDE Promotions.

 

2018

(we)bernt
for jazz quartet, 7’
A composition amalgamating the techniques of composers from the Second VIenesse School (most notably Anton Webern) with those utilised by contemporary jazz-composers, such as Tim Berne. Ensemble comprised of alto saxophone, electric guitar, double bass and drum kit.

for jazz orchestra, 9’
Short-listed for the RBC Jazz Composition and Arranging Prize and performed in June 2018 by the RBC Jazz Orchestra.
